As the drought in the San Luis Valley continues, Colorado Open Lands has explored creative approaches to help the community maintain viable water levels in its aquifer. One option we are employing is a groundwater conservation easement – applying our primary land conservation tool to water. This approach involves working with landowners who are able and willing to permanently retire their water rights so that their water remains in the aquifer. We are on the precipice of completing our first groundwater easement project, which we believe may be the first in the entire country!
