Understanding Our Financial Statements

The revenue reported in these financial statements includes the appraised value of donated conservation easements. As a result, the revenue and expense totals shown may be significantly higher than the annual amount needed to fund the operations of Colorado Open Lands.

While some land trusts report donated easements as an asset on their balance sheet, Colorado Open Lands reports the appraised value of donated easements as revenue and expense in the year of the donation. This difference is an accounting presentation and does not affect the long-term conservation protection provided by the easement or the financial resources available to support our mission.

It is the generosity of our donors and supporters that provides the funding needed each year to protect Colorado’s land, water, wildlife habitat, agricultural heritage, and the places that matter most to our communities.
